Revealing Your Past to Your Partner

Some people believe that you should share everything about yourself with the person you love, and others believe that it’s best to let the past stay in the past. What do your students think about this? What could they accept and not accept about their partner’s past?

Difficulty: CEFR B1-B2 / IELTS 4.0-6.5 / BULATS 40-74 / TOEFL 57-109

Target Student Age: 18+

This presentation was tested in a 55-minute class.

The Situation:

Could you accept it if your partner was married before? In prison before? Had a child that he or she never told you about?

We never really know what we can, and cannot, accept until it comes up in a relationship. Sure, we can guess and have some ideas about how we would feel, but love is a funny thing, isn’t it?

So, should you be honest with your partner about your past, or keep your past hidden? Both have potential risks, and some possible rewards.

 This presentation includes:

  • 2 vocabulary introduction slides
  • 4 opening discussion questions
  • 2 debates
  • 2 activities
  • 1 extension activity
